Avoiding Bed Bugs Infestations

by Oliver Pendry

It is when you go travelling that you have to be most careful about picking up a bed bug infestation. Usually you should be okay, but when you are sleeping in strange beds, like in a hotel or a hostel, or somewhere else like that, other people might have left behind an infestation for you to pick up.

Inspecting Hotels

If you are going to avoid sleeping in a hotel room that has got bed bugs in it then of course you are going to have to check it over first. As long as you are able to identify whether a room has an infestation or not, you should be able to avoid getting one yourself.

So how do you check a room for bedbugs? It's not easy because they are so small and they're so good at hiding. One of the places that you should look though is on the mattress, around the seams especially. If there's a large infestation you might even see a bed bug there, or at least little black marks which are evidence of their waste.

If you can't find any sign of them on the mattress then it probably isn't a very large infestation. It only requires one for there to be a problem though, so you should also check the bedside furniture. That's your best bet if it is only a small infestation. That's because the bedbugs will be close to the bed but can also remain well hidden.

That's really the best thing that you can do in order to avoid infestations. That isn't the only way that they spread though. If someone has an infestation they could have them on their clothes, and if you come in to contact with you then you could get an infestation that way. If they don't let you know there's a problem though then there isn't much you can do about that.

If you live in an apartment building then it's also possible that a bed bug infestation can spread from a neighbour's apartment. Whether that is going to happen is really going to depend on the state of the walls and ceilings in your building. If there are little holes in them then the bedbugs will probably find a way across.

Getting Rid of Bedbugs

Picking up an infestation of bed bugs is bad enough of course, but it's even worse if you don't even notice it. When that happens you can end up taking it with you, to another hotel perhaps, or even all the way back home. If you do notice it though then all you are going to have to do is make sure that everything you have with you is either washed or cleaned.

Unfortunately though not every is able to avoid bringing the little creatures back home with them. If that happens to you then the best thing that you can do is call in the pest control experts to get rid of them. On the other hand, it's something you could attempt yourself if you prefer.

If you decide that you do want to carry out the bed bug treatments yourself, something you are going to have to consider is buying Diatomaceous Earth. This is going to be a very useful substance because you can sprinkle it in any place that is too small to get a damp cloth in to.

It's going to be very important to clean absolutely everywhere around the room, in all of the very tiny gaps especially. That's where the bedbugs are most likely to be hiding. When it comes to cleaning the bed, for example, it's going to be necessary to take the bed frame apart so that you can get in to all of the gaps between the joints. It's best to use the experts for this sort of thing as you have to be so thorough.
