It's Only Ok - Mechanical Lawn Edger Critique
My father used it today for the first time and I have to say I am impressed. I had never owned an edger until I bought this one. My wife got this for me as a gift recently. I usually borrowed one from my neighbor or my father every once in a while. I love this new edger! It was easy to put together and easy to use. So I've got to stay on top of my yard if I don't want a "nasty-gram" from the lady who drives around and makes sure that all the grass is mowed and the shutters are painted. The B&D Edge hog and the replacement blades are a breeze to use. I bought this edger the spring of last year-- and I'm so glad I did. Before getting the edger, I'd been trying to edge with a weed eater-- that's like cutting a stick of butter with a wooden condiment spoon. My husband had never edged before, doesn't like anything not gas operated; but even he said the same thing. I would recommend it to anyone.
It does not cut nearly as sharp an edge as a gas edger either. I took mine back to Lowes and got there 5 HP 4 cycle Model 554 Troy-Built for $250.00 and boy am I glad I did. I used to use a multi-attachment gas powered edger (with swap out stems for the blower and weed-whacker). The always "ON" power in the B&D edger is far superior to what the gas powered one could do.
At first, I was trying to get by with using my weed whacker for edging, which worked ok the first two times. Since I live on a large corner lot with a sidewalk and the street to edge I felt like I was killing myself.
I do not like gas powered yard equipment, because gas lines dry up, and there are just so many problems with them, this is a very powerful electric item, and well worth the money. Had used a manual push type for years, broke down and got this. It's like any other piece of gear: you have to figure out how it works, what it does well, and how to take advantage of its strengths. Easy to control if it doesn't make the edge you want with just one pass, so what? If you try and use it after watering your lawn or after a rain mud will clump inside the edger and clog it up. I have also found the first edge of the season, or the first time you use it if you haven't ever edged your lawn, can be challenging for you and the edger.
This is the first edger I've ever owned, but it seems to work very well. There is a metal guide that makes it very easy to make a perfectly straight cut along your driveway or sidewalk.
I believe the blade was cold-rolled instead of hot-rolled, which will make the blade more durable. This Edger replaced a seventeen year old Black & Decker Edger. Because the handle is so long, it has more leverage against the motor housing. This causes the product to have a see-saw effect, and because of that, the product tips over quite a bit, especially with the extension cord attached.
